An Open Letter to 2019

Dear 2019,

It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. It seems that many have been eagerly awaiting your arrival, throwing countdown parties and setting off fireworks in celebration of you. The hope that you inspire and the joy you bring to so many people truly is a wonderful thing to behold, but I just have one question for you.

Are you really that special?

Okay, okay, that might have been a little bit harsh but the sentiment remains. Why do we place so many of our hopes and dreams into the palm of your hand when we know you’ve got about as much authority over the workings of the universe and the alignment of the stars as a goldfish does.

I understand the sentimentality of it all, I truly do. New beginnings, new opportunities, new memories to be made. These are all beautiful things that should be celebrated and strived for. But, why does it all have to hinge on this one particular day?

If we treated every tomorrow like we did the New Year, would we be better people? Would we be more motivated to get on that health kick we’ve wanted to start for ages? Would we be more resilient to deal with every obstacle that gets thrown in our direction? Would we love and appreciate one another more than we ever had before?

We place so much pressure on starting the New Year off right that we run out of steam by October and can’t wait until the next countdown clock begins. January 1st, 2019 will comprise of 86,400 seconds. That is the same 86,400 seconds that you are blessed with every single other day of the year.

Don’t let them go to waste.
